Gian Suhner (*Savognin, Switzerland) lives and works as a director, author, and visual artist between Berlin and Chur. He studied history and sociology at the University of Basel and the Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, and film directing at the German Film and Television Academy DFFB in Berlin. After working as a project manager and assistant on documentaries, television films, and exhibitions in Switzerland and Germany, Gian Suhner directed his own short films, which were screened at numerous festivals in Germany and abroad and won several awards. From 2018, he realized two video-based special exhibitions as a filmmaker and co-curator in partnership with the ALPS Museum in Bern. «LET'S TALK ABOUT MOUNTAINS. A cinematic approach to North Korea» explores mountains as a space of political history and identity in dialogue with over 40 people from North and South Korea. It was shown at ALPS in Bern from 2021 to 2023 and then at DHMD in Dresden. The exhibition project was nominated for the prestigious Museums + Heritage Award in 2023. The same partnership around the film and curatorial team of Gian Suhner and Beat Hächler (ALPS) produced «GREENLAND. Everything Changes» which is on display at ALPS in Bern until August 2026. Produced during three extensive research and filming trips and with numerous partners in Greenland/Kalaallit Nunaat, the exhibition creates a space for dialogue about a world in transformation. Based on the perspectives of more than 30 indigenous protagonists, the films and interviews reflect upon the many layers of change in an era of geopolitics, climate crisis, globalization, and decolonization. The exhibition, shown on 800 square meters, was nominated for the prestigious international DASA Award in 2025. Since the 2021/2022 season, Gian Suhner has also been working as a video artist for theater productions by Kornél Mundruczó and Julien Gosselin at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin. In 2022, he was awarded the Culture Promotion Prize by the canton of Graubünden. Gian Suhner is currently artist in residence at the Fundaziun Nairs, researching his first fictional feature film, which deals with issues of male emancipation, language, and identity. After numerous projects in Berlin and abroad, this project - and his stay in Nairs - marks a reunion with his roots in Graubünden. (c) Photo: Sarah Fuchs
