Gian Suhner was born in Savognin (Switzerland). After studying history and sociology in Basel and Madrid, he worked as assistant and project manager for documentary films and exhibitions in Switzerland and Germany.
In 2015, he began studying directing at the German Film and Television Academy DFFB in Berlin. His short films have screened at numerous festivals in Germany and abroad and have won several awards.
From March 2021 till September 2022, the Swiss Alpine Museum showed the special exhibition «LET'S TALK ABOUT MOUNTAINS. A Cinematic Approach to North Korea», where he was responsible for co-curating, directing and editing of the 3.5 hours long video parcours.
The exhibition project was nominated for the prestigious Museums + Heritage Award and was also on display at the DHMD in Dresden.
In the same position, he worked with ALPS on the exhibition «GREENLAND. Everything Changes», which is on show in Bern until August 2026.
Since the 2021 Gian Suhner has been working as a video artist for theater productions by Kornél Mundruczó and Julien Gosselin at the Volksbühne am Rosa-Luxemburg-Platz in Berlin.
In 2022 he was awarded the Culture Promotion Award by the Canton of Graubünden.
Gian Suhner lives and works as a director and filmmaker in Berlin and Chur.
